Ezek 9:1-7; 10:18-22; Psalm: 112; Mt 18:15-20

A step-by-step approach to building a peaceful community

In today’s Gospel, Jesus lays out a clear framework for addressing conflicts and reconciling with others within the Christian community. He instructs his followers to first address the issue privately with the individual involved, saying, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.” This direct approach is meant to avoid gossip or unnecessary drama and to give the other person a chance to respond and repent.

Jesus goes on to emphasize the importance of seeking reconciliation by involving additional witnesses if the issue is not resolved privately. He states, “If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.” This step is intended to provide accountability and support for both parties and to help facilitate a resolution that is fair and just.

Finally, Jesus declares the power of agreement in prayer and the presence of God in the process of reconciliation. He promises, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” This assurance of God’s presence and guidance underscores the divine importance of seeking peace and unity within the church community. In following Jesus’ instructions for conflict resolution, Christians can work towards healing broken relationships and building a peaceful community based on love, forgiveness, and understanding.
