God calls us to be fishers of men through faith and obedience

1Cor 3:18-23; Psalm: 23; Lk 5:1-11

In Luke 5:1-11, the story of Jesus calling His first disciples is recounted. As Peter, James, and John cleaned their nets after a night of unsuccessful fishing, Jesus climbed into Peter’s boat and asked him to push out into deeper waters. Despite Peter’s initial doubts, he obeys and witnesses a miraculous fish catch. Overwhelmed by this display of power, Peter falls at Jesus’ feet and declares his unworthiness. Jesus responds by calling them to follow Him and become fishers of men.

This passage reminds us of the importance of faith and obedience in our relationship with God. Like Peter, we may have doubts and uncertainties, but we must trust in God’s plan and follow His guidance. As Saint Teresa of Avila once said, “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things are passing away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.” Just as Peter had to step out in faith and trust Jesus, we too must be willing to go where He leads us, even when it seems daunting or uncertain.

Furthermore, the call to follow Jesus and become fishers of men is a reminder of our mission as Christians to share the Gospel and bring others to the faith. Saint Francis of Assisi famously said, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.” Our actions and attitudes should reflect the love and grace of Jesus, drawing others to Him through our witness. Just as Jesus called Peter, James, and John to leave behind their livelihoods and follow Him, we too are called to prioritize our relationship with Him above all else and share His message of salvation with the world.
