We are called to be the light of the world

Prov 3:27-34; Psalm: 14; Lk 8:16-18

In Luke 8:16-18, Jesus tells his followers that no one lights a lamp and then covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand so that those who enter may see the light. He goes on to say that nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing is concealed that will not be made known and brought into the open. He concludes by saying that those who listen will be given more, while those who do not listen, even what they think they have, will be taken away from them.

This passage serves as a reminder to believers that we are called to be a light in the world, shining with the truth and love of Christ. Just as a lamp is meant to be placed high on a stand to illuminate a room, Christians are called to live their lives openly and authentically, sharing the light of Christ with those around them. We are not meant to keep our faith hidden or private, but rather to let it shine brightly for all to see.

Jesus also warns that nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed. This speaks to the fact that God sees and knows all things, even those that are hidden from human eyes. We are called to live in a way that is honest and true, knowing that ultimately everything we do and say will be brought into the light. This should serve as a reminder to us to always strive to live according to God’s Will, knowing that we will one day give an account for our actions.

Furthermore, Jesus’ statement that those who listen will be given more, while those who do not listen will have even what they think they have taken away serves as a cautionary tale. Those who are open to receiving the message of Christ will continue to grow in their faith and understanding, while those who close themselves off will find themselves losing even the little faith they may have had. This should serve as a reminder to us to always be open to hearing God’s word and to actively seek to grow in our relationship with him.

Luke 8:16-18 serves as a powerful reminder to Christians to live openly and authentically as a light in the world, to be mindful that everything we do will one day be brought into the light, and to always be open to hearing and receiving God’s word. May we all strive to live in a way that honors God and brings glory to His Holy Name.
