Jesus’ love and forgiveness as a response to rejection

Job 3:1-3.11-17.20-23; Psalm: 87; Lk 9:51-56

Today’s gospel tells a powerful story of Jesus and his disciples traveling to Jerusalem. As they journeyed, they passed through a Samaritan village, but the people there did not welcome Jesus because he was heading to Jerusalem. In response, James and John, two of Jesus’ disciples, asked if they should call down fire from heaven to destroy the village. However, Jesus rebuked them. This story reminds us of the importance of compassion and forgiveness in our lives.

Today we commemorate the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as “The Little Flower” and St. Therese of the Child Jesus. St. Therese lived a life of humility and simplicity. She emphasized the importance of love and forgiveness in all aspects of life, echoing the message of Jesus in the passage on Luke 9:51-56. St. Therese says, “Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” This quote emphasizes the importance of selflessness and kindness in our daily lives. Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves, showing compassion and forgiveness even when it may be difficult.

Today’s gospel teaches us the importance of compassion and forgiveness in our lives. St. Therese of Lisieux emphasized the significance of love and kindness in our interactions with others. As Christians, we are called to follow Jesus’ example and show mercy and grace to those around us, even in the face of rejection or hostility. Let us try to live out these principles in our daily lives, seeking reconciliation and peace in all situations.
