Qualities of a disciple on Jesus’ mission
Job 19:21-27; Psalm: 27; Lk 10:1-12
Today’s Gospel recounts the moment when Jesus sent out seventy-two of his followers to spread his message and perform miracles in various cities and towns. As we reflect on this passage, several themes emerge that resonate deeply with us and provide valuable insights for our own spiritual journey.
First, we can be struck by the sense of urgency and purpose with which Jesus sends out his disciples. He instructs them to go out in pairs, without any material possessions, and to rely solely on the hospitality of others. This demonstrates the importance of relying on God’s provisions and being willing to step out in faith to share the message of Christ with others. It challenges us to consider how we can take bold steps in our own lives to share the love and truth of Jesus with those around us, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zone.
Secondly, Jesus warns the disciples that they will face rejection and persecution in some places but should not be discouraged. This reminds us that as followers of Christ, we should expect to face opposition and challenges in our own faith journey. It can be disheartening when others reject or mock our beliefs, but this passage encourages us to stay strong in our faith and not be deterred by the world’s negativity. Instead, we can trust God’s strength and guidance to help us persevere through difficult times.
Thirdly, Jesus emphasizes the importance of peace and hospitality in the disciples’ interactions with others. He instructs them to bless the houses they visit, and if they are welcomed, to stay and offer their healing and teaching services. This reminds us of the power of kindness and hospitality in building relationships and sharing the message of Christ. It challenges us to examine how we can extend the same kind of love and hospitality to those around us, regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds.
In addition, Jesus warns the disciples that they should not become prideful or boastful about their abilities and successes, but rather humbly acknowledge that all their powers and gifts come from God. This is a humbling reminder for us to always recognize and give thanks for the gifts and blessings that God has given us, and to use them for His glory rather than our own self-promotion. It encourages us to remain humble and grateful in all circumstances, knowing that God is the source of all goodness and grace in our lives.
Reflecting on today’s Gospel has provided us with valuable insights and challenges for our spiritual journey. It has encouraged us to step out in faith, persevere through challenges, show kindness and hospitality to others, and remain humble in the face of success. By following the disciples’ examples in this passage, we can strive to live out our faith more authentically and effectively in our daily lives.
