Celebration of World Teachers’ Day in Yangon, Myanmar

The celebration of World Teachers’ Day took place in the Parish Hall of St. Augustine Church, Yangon Archdiocese on October 5, 2024.

The Yangon Archdiocesan Education Commission and Shwe Hin Thar Private Middle School in Bago organized the event.

School Teachers and responsible persons of Catholic Schools and Vocational learning centers, such as Shwe Hin Thar Private Middle School, Flowers Education Private School, Myat Pyinnyar School, Light English School, and Learning Center, Little Cocoon, Joseph University, LOUI Nursing Aide and Pharmacist AideTraining Center, Tamil Loyola Community College, Pyinyar San Yay Education Center, Mazzarello Vocational training center, Myanmar Leadership Institute, Thuwana Learning Center, Salesian Vocational Training School took part in the event.

All the schools and learning centers presented their mission, vision, and activities using PowerPoint presentations and video clips to the event attendees. However, some Catholic learning centers could not participate in this event.

Rev. Fr. Abraham Shwe Win, director of the Diocesan Commission for Education, highlighted the importance of respecting the teachers’ values in society due to their role as second parents.

“There are only two kinds of teachers. They are parents as the early and first teachers in the family and the second type is academic teachers in the schools and universities,” said Fr. Abraham.

De La Salle Brother Joseph Aung shared about Catholic Education.

“As educators and spiritual mentors, we have the power to ignite the flame of curiosity, cultivate the seeds of compassion, and model the values of integrity, humility, and service that are at the heart of Christian education,” Brother Joseph emphasized.

Speaking about the Values of Teachers, Saya Gyi U Lay Maung, Superintendent of ILBC, made known the Guiding Principles such as Integrity, Compassion, Commitment to life-long learning, Respect for diversity, Patience and flexibility, Inspiring curiosity and critical thinking, Collaboration, and Community engagement, Responsibility and Role Modeling which are necessary that all the teachers should have.

Rev. Fr. Mercian Thet Kyaw, Director of Yangon Archdiocesan Youth Commission and Parish Priest of St. Augustine Church speaks about the necessity of morals and discipline.

“A person with self-discipline will be successful in his/her future. Self-discipline enables a person to attain one’s own goal. A school should form a person to be with good morals and self-discipline,” remarked Fr. Mercian.

At the end of the event, over 70-year-old teachers were honored and presented gifts to them.

The event was concluded by Thanksgiving mass offered by His Excellency Bishop Noel Saw Naw Aye, Chair Bishop of the Episcopal Commission for Education.

Over 200 participated in the World Teachers’ Day Event.

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on 5th October to celebrate all teachers around the world since 1994 all over the world.
