The need for inner transformation
Gal 5:1-6; Psalm: 118; Lk 11:37-41
In today’s Gospel, Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for their outward piety and lack of inner purity. He warns them, “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God” (Luke 11:42). This passage invites us to reflect on the importance of authentic spirituality and the need to cultivate a genuine relationship with God, rather than simply going through the motions of religious practice.
Today, we commemorate the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, a renowned mystic and Doctor of the Church, who offers valuable insights on this topic. She emphasizes the importance of true humility and purity of heart in our spiritual journey. St. Teresa reminds us, “Humility, the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.” This echoes the message of Jesus in the Gospel, that it is not enough to perform external acts of piety if our hearts are not truly aligned with the Will of God.
St. Teresa also highlights the importance of self-examination and repentance in our spiritual life. She cautions, “Reflect upon the sins of your youth, and realize that your only hope is in God’s mercy.” This is a powerful reminder that we must constantly strive for conversion and renewal, turning away from sin and towards God. In the Gospel passage, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and calls them to cleanse the inside of the cup, that the outside may also be clean. This speaks to the need for us to examine our own hearts and motives, seeking to grow in sincerity and authenticity in our relationship with God.
Furthermore, St. Teresa emphasizes the importance of prayer and contemplation in our spiritual life. She writes, “He who has not made this determination not to return to his sins will be like the dog that returns to his vomit, as the Scripture says.” This quote serves as a warning against complacency and highlights the need for vigilance in our spiritual practice. Just as Jesus urges the Pharisees to focus on justice and the love of God rather than external rituals, St. Teresa reminds us that true prayer must come from a sincere and contrite heart.
Today’s Gospel challenges us to reflect on the authenticity of our spirituality and the need for inner transformation. St. Teresa of Avila’s teachings provide valuable guidance on the importance of humility, self-examination, and prayer in our spiritual journey. As we strive to deepen our relationship with God and grow in holiness, may we heed the words of Jesus and St. Teresa, seeking to cleanse our hearts and minds so that we may truly be vessels of God’s grace and love.
