Pope Francis appoints the first bishop of Mindat Diocese in Myanmar

Pope Francis appointed Most. Rev. Msgr. Augustine Thang Zawm Hung, to be the bishop of Mindat Diocese in Myanmar at 5:30 PM (Myanmar Standard Time) on January 25.

Pope Francis had erected the New Diocese of Mindat, with territory taken from the Diocese of Hakha, making it a suffragan of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Mandalay.

52 years old, Msgr. Augustine is in charge for the translation of the Bible into the local language and Vice-parish priest of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Mindat, Chin State.

He was born in Mindat on December 4, 1973, and ordained priest on November 17, 2002.

Msgr. Augustine studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Biblicum) in Rome and obtained the Licentiate in Sacred Scripture in 2009.

Bishop-elect obtained his Doctorate in biblical studies from the Faculty of Catholic Theology—University of Innsbruck in Austria in 2018.

From 2003 to 2005, he served as the parish priest of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kanpetlet.

Msgr. Augustine served as the personal secretary of the Bishop of Hakha Diocese from 2009 to 2010.

From 2010 to 2012, he served as the personal secretary of the Bishop and Chancellor of Hakha Diocese.

Bishop-elect was a professor at St. Joseph’s Major Seminary in Yangon from 2018 to 2022.

His Episcopal Consecration will be held on April 27, 2025, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Chanthargone, Paleik township, Mandalay Archdiocese.
