Pathein Diocese Clergy Conclude Annual Retreat Focused on Spiritual Renewal

The Diocese of Pathein’s Annual Priests’ Retreat concluded on Friday, October 17, after four days of intensive prayer and reflection aimed at deepening the spiritual lives of its clergy.
The retreat, held from October 13-17 at the Diocesan Hall, saw the participation of over seventy-five priests, including retired clergy.
Preached by Fr. James Eishu, a formator from the Sacred Heart Minor Seminary in Mayanchaung, the retreat centered on the theme “Spirituality in Ministry.”

In his opening address, Bishop Henry Eikhlein underscored the significance of the event, describing it as “a holy and dedicated time, set apart for a sacred purpose.” He reminded those gathered that the Holy Spirit is the “main agent of the retreat.”

Fr. James Eishu guided the priests through a series of meditations rooted in Ignatian spirituality. On the opening night, he defined spirituality as “a way of living in relationship with God — a long, loving look at the real,” drawing from the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola. He encouraged the clergy to perceive God’s communication in daily life and to explore their deepest desires as a path to discerning God’s will.

Using the Gospel story of the healing of Bartimaeus, Fr. James illustrated how Jesus helps individuals identify their genuine needs. He emphasized that desire is not to be suppressed but is instead a “creative energy” for growth and service. The retreat master further explained that the spiritual call is encapsulated in Christ’s twin commands to first “Come” to Him and then to “Go” on mission.
The meticulously scheduled days blended communal and personal prayer. The timetable, provided by Bishop Henry, included daily Holy Mass, multiple meditation sessions, spiritual talks, Eucharistic Adoration, and the recitation of the Rosary. A dedicated hour for personal adoration before the Blessed Sacrament was a key feature of each day.

The retreat’s curriculum was structured thematically, with successive days focusing on the Priest and Vocation, Holiness, relationship with the People and the World, and the Sacrament of Confession.
The event culminated on the final day with a discussion on pastoral and spiritual planning for the diocese, followed by a gesture of gratitude to Fr. James for his guidance. The retreat served as a profound period of unity and spiritual renewal for the clergy, reinforcing their commitment to ministerial service.
