Doubt to believe by encountering Jesus

Rev 21:9-14; Psalm: 144; Jn 1:45-51

Today, we celebrate the feast day of St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. In the Gospel of John, we are introduced to Nathanael, who is also known as Bartholomew. Nathanael expressed doubt when Philip told him that they had found the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. However, when Nathanael met Jesus, he was astonished by the revelation that Jesus already knew him before they met. This encounter with Jesus prompts Nathanael to proclaim his belief in Jesus as the Son of God.

In John 1:45-51, we see Nathanael’s encounter with Jesus, where he initially expresses disbelief that anything good could come from Nazareth. However, when Jesus reveals his knowledge of Nathanael’s character and actions, Nathanael’s doubt is transformed into belief. This passage reminds us of the power of Jesus to see into our hearts and know us intimately. It also highlights the importance of being open to encountering Jesus in unexpected places and people.

The story of Nathanael’s encounter with Jesus challenges us to examine our own doubts and beliefs in the divine. Like Nathanael, we may have moments of skepticism when it comes to our faith or God’s presence in our lives. However, when we open our hearts and minds to the possibility of encountering Jesus, we may be surprised by how he reveals himself to us. Just as Jesus knew Nathanael before they met, he knows each of us intimately and desires to have a personal relationship with us.

As we reflect on this passage, we are challenged to examine our own preconceived notions and biases towards others. Just as Nathanael initially dismissed Jesus based on his background, we, too, can fall into the trap of judging others based on superficial factors. However, Jesus teaches us to look beyond the external and see the potential for goodness and grace within each person. This passage encourages us to approach others with an open heart and mind, recognizing that God can work through anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Today’s Gospel calls us to have faith in Jesus as the Son of God and to follow him with a heart full of belief and devotion. Just as Nathanael’s encounter with Jesus transformed his doubt into faith, we too are invited to deepen our relationship with Christ and allow him to reveal himself to us in new and unexpected ways. This passage challenges us to remain open to Jesus’ presence in our lives, trusting that he sees us for who we truly are and calls us to follow him with unwavering faith and trust.
