Meaning of Cross in our lives

Num 21:4b-9; Psalm: 77; Phil 2:6-11; Jn 3:13-17

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. We commemorate the elevation of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. This feast is an opportunity for us to reflect on the power and significance of the cross in our faith and lives.

First and foremost, the cross symbolizes sacrifice and redemption. Jesus willingly went to the cross to bear the sins of humanity, offering himself as a perfect sacrifice for the atonement of our sins. This act of selfless love demonstrates the depth of God’s grace and mercy towards us, reminding us of the extent to which he is willing to go to save us from our sins.

Secondly, the cross serves as a powerful reminder of the victory of good over evil. Despite the suffering and death that Jesus endured on the cross, his resurrection three days later proved that death could not hold him down. The cross represents the triumph of light over darkness and the ultimate defeat of sin and death through Jesus’ victory on the cross.

Thirdly, the cross serves as a source of hope and comfort for believers. In times of trial and tribulation, the cross reminds us that God is always with us, offering us his strength and guidance to overcome any obstacle that comes our way. The cross symbolizes the hope that reassures us of God’s presence and protection in our lives.

Furthermore, the cross calls us to embrace our own crosses and follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Just as Jesus carried his cross to Calvary, we are called to take up our own crosses and follow him, bearing our own sufferings and challenges with faith and perseverance. The cross challenges us to live a life of selflessness and service, putting the needs of others before our own.

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a time for believers to reflect on the profound meaning of the cross in our faith and our lives. It reminds us of God’s love, sacrifice, victory, hope, and call to discipleship. As we meditate on the significance of the cross, may we be inspired to embrace our own crosses and follow Jesus with faith and courage, trusting in his unfailing love and mercy.
