A time for fasting and a time for feasting

1Cor 4:1-5; Psalm: 36; Lk 5:33-39

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is questioned by the Pharisees and teachers of the law about fasting. They ask him why his disciples do not fast, like the disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees. Jesus responds by explaining that there is a time for fasting and a time for feasting and that his disciples will fast when he is taken away from them. He compares himself to a bridegroom and explains that his disciples should rejoice in his presence at that moment, rather than mourn.

Saint Augustine once said, “Fasting cleanses the soul, raises the mind, subjects one’s flesh to the spirit, renders the heart contrite and humble, scatters the clouds of concupiscence, quenches the fire of lust, kindles the true light of chastity.” This quote reminds us of the importance of fasting in our spiritual lives. While Jesus explains that his disciples will fast when he is taken away from them, we need to remember the benefits of fasting and the discipline it brings to our spiritual journey.

The passage from Luke 5:33-39 also teaches us about the importance of discerning the appropriate time for fasting and feasting in our lives. Just as there is a time for fasting and a time for feasting, there is a time for everything in our spiritual lives. It is important to listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and discern when we should be fasting for purification and when we should be rejoicing in the presence of the Lord. As we navigate through the challenges of life, let us remember to seek discernment and guidance from the Lord in all things, including our fasting practices.
