Live out our faith through our actions
Job 38:1.12-21; 40:3-5; Psalm: 138; Lk 10:13-16
In Luke 10:13-16, Jesus expresses his disappointment with the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum for their lack of faith and refusal to repent despite witnessing numerous miracles. He warns them of the consequences of rejecting him and his message, stating that their judgment will be harsher than that of the notoriously wicked cities of Tyre and Sidon. This passage reminds us of the importance of faith and repentance in the Christian life.
Reflecting on this passage, we are called to examine our own faith and repentance. Are we truly faithful to God and his teachings, or do we sometimes waver in our beliefs? Are we quick to repent when we stray from the path of righteousness, or do we stubbornly cling to our sinful ways? Jesus’ words challenge us to reevaluate our commitment to him, reminding us that true discipleship requires unwavering faith and humble repentance.
Today we commemorate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, known for his deep faith and commitment to poverty and offers powerful insight into the importance of humility and repentance in the Christian life. He once said, “Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” These words remind us that even the smallest acts of faith and repentance can lead to great transformation in our lives.
Furthermore, St. Francis famously said, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” This quote emphasizes the importance of living out our faith through our actions, rather than just professing it with our words. Just as Jesus called the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum to repentance through his miracles, so too are we called to be living examples of God’s love and grace in the world.
Today’s Gospel challenges us to reflect on our own faith and repentance, while the words of St. Francis of Assisi inspire us to live out our faith through our actions. Let us heed Jesus’ warning to the towns that rejected him, and strive to be faithful disciples who continually seek repentance and transformation in our lives. As we do so, may we be empowered by the grace of God to do the impossible and preach the Gospel through our actions, bringing light and hope to a world in need of God’s love.
