In Remote Parish, Bishop’s First Visit Brings Spiritual Strength and Call to Unity

In a significant pastoral journey, Bishop John Mung Ngawn La Sam of the Diocese of Myitkyina made his first-ever visit to the remote Alam Wudang Bum Parish on Sunday, November 23, 2025, bringing encouragement and the sacraments to a dedicated Catholic community.

The visit, timed for the Solemnity of Christ the King, was marked by a warm welcome from Parish Priest Fr. Luka Kawa Tu Mai and parishioners at St. Mary’s Church. The occasion quickly turned into a major spiritual event as Bishop John presided over a Holy Mass, concelebrated by Fr. Luka and Fr. Jerome N Ding La Raw.

A highlight of the celebration was the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, where 130 faithful from the parish were strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, marking a profound moment of growth for the local community.

Following the Mass, Bishop John delivered a heartfelt and candid speech, urging the congregation to embrace humility and fidelity. He encouraged the faithful not to be afraid to confess their weaknesses, drawing a powerful parallel to the repentant thief on the cross who humbly asked Christ for mercy.

In a direct appeal for loyalty, the bishop cautioned against actions that undermine the Church’s unity. “Some faithful say ‘I love priests and the Church’ at the same time they destroy them,” he noted, warning against the betrayal exemplified by Judas Iscariot. He concluded his address with a call to persistent prayer for both the Church and the country during a period of ongoing difficulty.

The visit served to spotlight a vibrant but isolated Catholic community. Alam Wudang Bum Parish, encompassing three villages, is home to 313 Catholic families and a total of 2,013 parishioners. Bishop John’s inaugural trip not only provided crucial sacramental ministry but also reinforced the bonds of faith and communion between the diocesan seat and its farthest flock.
