Ezek 24:15-24; Psalm: Dt 32; Mt 19:16-22

Attachment to material wealth is a block to eternal life

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells the story of a rich young man who approaches him and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus instructs him to sell all of his possessions and give the money to the poor, but the man is unable to do so because he is attached to his wealth. This passage serves as a reflection on the importance of detachment from material possessions and wealth in order to fully follow Christ.

Jesus Christ lived a life of poverty and simplicity, setting an example of humility and selflessness for his followers. Despite being the son of God, Jesus chose to be born in a humble manger in Bethlehem and lived a life of service to others. “Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Phil 2:&) He often spoke about the importance of helping the poor and marginalized, showing compassion and kindness to those in need.

Pope Francis has often emphasized the dangers of wealth and material possessions in the Christian life. He has urged believers to live simply and in solidarity with the poor, echoing the words of Jesus in this passage. Pope Francis once said, “The worst poverty is not the poverty of our living conditions, but the poverty of our hearts.” We should have compassionate hearts and concern for the needy. Our possessions are meant not only for us but also for helping the poor and needy.

Today’s Gospel challenges us to reflect on our own attachment to material possessions and wealth. Detachment to material wealth and service to the poor will help us to follow Christ fully. Let us strive to live lives of simplicity, service, and love for our brothers and sisters in need so that we may inherit eternal life.
