Greatness in heaven is not determined by status or position

Job 1:6-22; Psalm: 16; Lk 9:46-50

The passage in Luke 9:46-50 narrates an incident where the disciples argued about who was the greatest. Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, uses a child to teach them a lesson about humility and the importance of serving others. In this passage, Jesus says, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest” (Luke 9:48). This lesson on humility and service is one that St. Jerome, a prominent Christian theologian from the fourth century, echoes.

St. Jerome firmly believed in the importance of humility and service in the Christian faith. He once said, “Let your life be a fountain of good deeds, desiring neither name nor glory on earth.” This quote from St. Jerome reminds us that as Christians, our focus should not be on seeking recognition or accolades for our good deeds, but rather on serving others out of a pure heart and a genuine desire to honor God.

St. Jerome’s teachings on humility and service align closely with the message that Jesus imparted to his disciples in Luke 9. Jesus used a child as an example to show his disciples that greatness in the kingdom of God is not determined by status or position, but by a heart that is willing to serve others selflessly. St. Jerome often stressed the importance of imitating Christ in all aspects of our lives, including our attitude towards others. In his commentary on Matthew, St. Jerome writes, “Be at peace with your own soul, then heaven and earth will be at peace with you.” This quote reminds us that true peace and contentment come from serving others and living a life of humility and selflessness.

The passage from Luke 9:46-50 reminds us of the importance of humility and service in the Christian life. St. Jerome’s teachings on these virtues further reinforce the message that Jesus imparted to his disciples. As we reflect on this passage and the words of St. Jerome, let us strive to embody the humility and servant heart that are central to the teachings of Jesus. Let us seek to serve others out of love for God and a desire to honor him in all that we do.
