New Catholic Prayer Mountain and Cross Site Inaugurated at 4,100 Feet in Myanmar’s Putao Zone

In a significant event for the local Catholic community, the newly constructed N Hkyeng Bum Prayer Mountain and cross site was formally inaugurated on September 19, 2025, following a dedication ceremony at its summit, 4,100 feet above sea level.
The site, which began construction in 2022, is now established as the highest and largest cross and prayer mountain within the Putao Parish Zone. The inauguration ceremony drew Catholic faithful from Alang Ga Village and surrounding areas to the mountain peak overlooking Alang Ga Village in Machanbaw Township.

The spiritual dedication was led by Fr. John Byin Tu Aung of the Putao Zone and Fr. Mark Kyi Moe of Lonshayang Parish. The clergy offered prayers of blessing for the new site, culminating in the celebration of a Holy Mass at the summit to consecrate the grounds officially.
According to Catechist Anthony Inkhwam Tangwan, the project was realized through the generous contributions of the Luka U Sap Sin Wa family, enabling the construction of the cross and prayer facilities for the village’s twenty Catholic families.

“The project to establish the cross and prayer facilities on the mountain summit has been made possible since 2022 with their generous contribution,” Catechist Anthony stated, highlighting the critical role of the donors.
The inauguration ceremony was a multi-faceted event, reflecting the community’s deep investment in the project. The proceedings included special offerings to the Church, blessings conducted by the construction committee and the project donors, the celebration of the Holy Mass, and thanksgiving events.

The successful completion of the N Hkyeng Bum Prayer Mountain is seen as a major milestone for the Catholic community in the remote region. The site provides a dedicated space for worship, pilgrimage, and spiritual retreat, reinforcing the faith of the local populace. Its elevated location, offering panoramic views of the Kachin landscape, is intended to serve as a powerful symbol of faith and a beacon for believers.

The attendance of worshippers from neighboring villages underscores the site’s regional importance, extending its reach beyond Alang Ga Village. The project stands as a testament to community collaboration and faith-based initiative in the Putao Zone.

With the formal inauguration complete, the N Hkyeng Bum Prayer Mountain is now open for religious observance, providing a new, prominent landmark for spiritual reflection in the highlands of Kachin State.
