Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (C), June 1, 2025

What does Jesus’ Ascension mean for our lives today

Acts 1:1-11; Psalm: 46; Heb 9,24-28; 10,19-23; Lk 24:46-53

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today we gather to celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This moment in our liturgical calendar invites us to reflect deeply on the significance of Jesus’ ascension and what it means for our lives today. In the readings from Acts, the letter to the Hebrews, and the Gospel of Luke, we find profound truths about our faith and our mission as followers of Christ. In Acts chapter 1 verses 1 to 11, we witness the scene of Jesus ascending into heaven. Jesus gives His disciples a final command to be His witnesses, not just in Jerusalem, but to the ends of the earth. This is not just a farewell but a commissioning. Jesus entrusts us with the responsibility of sharing His love and truth with the world. As we reflect on this, we realize that the ascension is not an ending but a beginning. It signifies the start of our mission as His disciples.

The author of Hebrews, in chapter 9 verses 24 to 28, reminds us that Jesus has entered into heaven itself, appearing before God on our behalf. He is our advocate, our intercessor. This profound truth fills us with hope and assurance. We are not alone in our struggles. We have a Savior who stands at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. In our daily lives, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus is with us, guiding us, and empowering us to live out our faith. In Hebrews chapter 10 verses 19 to 23, we are encouraged to draw near to God with a sincere heart and full assurance of faith. This invitation is a call to intimacy with God. It reminds us that through the sacrifice of Christ, we have access to the very heart of God. We are called to hold unswervingly to the hope we profess. This hope is not just a feeling but a firm foundation upon which we can stand in the face of life’s challenges.

The Gospel of Luke, chapter 24, verses 46 to 53, encapsulates Jesus’ final moments with His disciples. He opens their minds to understand the Scriptures and tells them to proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations. This is our mission as well. We are called to be vessels of God’s grace, sharing the message of love and forgiveness with those around us. We are reminded that Jesus’ ascension does not mean His absence. Instead, it marks His reign as King and His continual presence in our lives through the Holy Spirit. Mother Teresa once said, “I can do things you cannot. You can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things.” This quote beautifully illustrates the essence of our community as followers of Christ. Each one of us has unique gifts and talents. Together, as the body of Christ, we can accomplish the mission He has entrusted to us. Pope Francis, in his call to evangelization, encourages us to be bold in our witness. He states, “We are all called to be missionaries of hope, to bring the light of Christ into the world.” This call is particularly relevant as we navigate a world filled with uncertainty and despair.

As we reflect on the ascension, let us remember that we are not called to simply observe but to engage actively in the work of Christ. So, how do we apply these truths in our daily lives? First, we must deepen our relationship with God. Take time each day to pray, to read Scripture, and to seek His guidance. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead you and open your heart to His voice. Second, let us be witnesses of hope in our communities. Look for opportunities to serve others, to share the love of Christ through actions and words. Whether it is through volunteering, comforting a friend in need, or simply being present to someone who is struggling, let us embody the love of Christ in everything we do. Lastly, let us hold on to the hope that comes from knowing our Savior reigns. In the midst of challenges, let us remember that Christ is interceding for us and that our future is secure in Him. We are not alone in our journey. We are part of a great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us and who cheer us on. As we celebrate the Ascension today, let us be inspired to live out our calling as disciples of Christ. Let us go forth with joy and confidence, proclaiming the message of love and forgiveness to a world in need. May God bless you all on this solemn day, and may we be filled with the Holy Spirit as we continue to carry out the mission of Christ in our lives. Amen.
