From Darkness to Dawn: The New Life of the Risen

Voice over by Eliz

Romans 6:3-11, Mt 28:1-10,

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

This is the night! This is the night when darkness yields to light, when death is swallowed up in victory, when the ancient story of God’s saving love reaches its climax. We have journeyed through the long vigil, listening to the echoes of salvation history. Now, we stand at the empty tomb, and the silence of Holy Saturday gives way to the song of the Resurrection. Tonight, we are not merely spectators of an ancient event. We are participants in a mystery that transforms us from the inside out.

Saint Paul, in his letter to the Romans, unveils the profound meaning of what we celebrate. “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” Baptism is not merely a ritual of initiation; it is a radical immersion into the Paschal Mystery. When we descended into those waters, we descended with Christ into the tomb. When we rose from those waters, we rose with Him to new life. “We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.”

Paul insists that this is not mere symbolism. Our old self was crucified with Him, “so that we might no longer be slaves to sin.” The tyranny of sin has been broken. Death no longer has dominion over us because it no longer has dominion over Him. “For the death that he died, he died to sin once and for all; but the life that he lives, he lives for God.” And here is the astonishing truth that Paul places before us: “Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.”

This is the theological reality of what we celebrate tonight. But theology must become lived experience. The Gospel of Matthew brings us to the very moment when this reality broke into human history. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary come to the tomb at dawn. Suddenly, there is a great earthquake, an angel descends, rolls back the stone, and sits upon it. The guards are paralyzed with fear. The angel speaks to the women: “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.”

The angel sends them with a message: go, tell the disciples that Jesus goes before them to Galilee. And then, in the most tender moment of this Gospel, Jesus Himself meets them. He greets them, and they fall at His feet, holding onto Him in worship. He says, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

Pope Benedict XVI reflected on this encounter: “The resurrection is not a theory; it is a historical reality that breaks into the human condition.” St. Augustine, with his characteristic depth, wrote, “The resurrection of Christ is our hope. For it is the pledge of our own resurrection.”

Tonight, as we celebrate this Easter Vigil, we are invited to let the reality of the Resurrection shape our lives. For those who are baptized, this night calls us to renew the promises of that baptism—to die to sin and live for God. For those who will be baptized tonight, we witness the miracle of new birth, the Spirit breathing life into souls, the waters of death becoming waters of life.

What does this mean for our daily lives? It means that fear no longer has the final word. The angel’s words—”Do not be afraid”—echo through the centuries. It means that death is not the end; it is a passage. It means that our failures, our sins, our old selves have been crucified with Christ, and we are free to live differently.

This Easter, let us go forth from this vigil not carrying the weight of the tomb, but carrying the light of the Resurrection. Let us be, like the women, witnesses to what we have seen and heard. Let us live in the newness of life that Paul proclaimed. For He is risen. He is truly risen. And in Him, we rise as well. Amen.

Happy Easter! Alleluia!

May God bless you all!
