The Faithfulness That Conquers All Division

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In the tender words of Lamentations, we are given an anchor for our souls: “The Lord’s acts of mercy are not exhausted, his compassion is not spent; they are renewed each morning—great is your faithfulness!” This is the bedrock of our hope. No matter the depth of our night, God’s mercy dawns anew. The prophet calls us to a response of quiet, trusting surrender: “It is good to hope in silence for the saving help of the Lord.”

Yet, in the Gospel, we are thrust into a scene of cosmic conflict. Jesus, the very embodiment of the Father’s compassionate mercy, is confronted by a demonic division—a man who is mute, cut off from communion. With sovereign authority, Christ heals him. But some in the crowd, their hearts hardened, attribute this work of divine goodness to “Beelzebul.” Jesus reveals the stark truth: a house divided against itself cannot stand. His exorcisms are not minor miracles; they are the frontline assaults of God’s Kingdom against the kingdom of darkness. “But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons,” He declares, “then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Here lies the profound Catholic interpretation: Christ is the faithful, merciful Lord of Lamentations, and He is the victorious, unifying King who binds the “strong man” of evil and plunders his house. The Enemy’s strategy is always division—within us, between us, and against God. Christ’s mission is radical, healing unity. As Pope Francis teaches, “Division is the work of the Father of Lies, the great divider. Jesus brings communion, unity.”

Where is our comfort? It is in the unwavering faithfulness of God, whose mercies are new for us this very morning, especially when we feel besieged by inner or outer turmoil. Our spiritual strength is in our clear, deliberate alignment with Christ’s undivided Kingdom. “Whoever is not with me is against me,” He says. This is a call to decisive discipleship.

When we are plagued by inner conflict—guilt, fear, addictive patterns—we must, in hopeful silence, call upon the Stronger Man, Jesus, to bind those forces and restore our inner unity. When we encounter division in families or communities, we are called to be instruments of Christ’s unifying mercy, not perpetuators of strife.

Therefore, let us begin each day receiving the new dawn of God’s compassion. Let us examine our hearts and loyalties: do we, by gossip, resentment, or sin, side with the divider? Or do we, through forgiveness, charity, and prayer, stand firmly with Christ the Unifier?

Take courage. The faithful Lord of Lamentations is the mighty King of the Gospel. His mercy is your shield, and His power is your victory. In Him, no division can finally stand. Amen.

May God bless you all!
