Ezek 2:8—3:4; Psalm: 118; Mt 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

Obedience and faithfulness to God through humility, trust, and value each other

In the first reading, God calls Ezekiel to be a prophet to the Israelites, a people known for their stubbornness and rebellion against God. Despite the challenges that Ezekiel will face in bringing God’s message to these people, God assures him of his support and guidance. In Ezekiel 3:4, God tells Ezekiel, “Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak my words to them.” This command highlights the importance of boldly proclaiming the truth of God’s message, even in the face of resistance or opposition.

Similarly, in today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches His disciples about the importance of humility and childlike faith. Jesus tells them, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” This passage reminds us that in order to truly follow God and receive his blessings, we must humble ourselves and approach him with childlike trust and dependence. Jesus also emphasizes the value of each individual soul, comparing the lost sheep to a shepherd who searches diligently until it is found.

Both passages, from the first reading and Gospel, call us to reflect on our own obedience and faithfulness to God. Just as God called Ezekiel to be a bold and faithful messenger, he calls each of us to proclaim his truth with courage and conviction. Similarly, Jesus reminds us of the importance of humility, trust, and valuing each and every soul. As we meditate on these passages, may we be inspired to walk boldly in obedience to God’s call, and to approach him with childlike faith and humility, trusting in his unfailing love and provision.
