Need for inner transformation and genuine love for God and others

2Thess 2:1-3a.14-17; Psalm: 95; Mt 23:23-26

In the Gospel of Matthew 23:23-26, Jesus criticizes the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy and lack of true righteousness. He condemns them for meticulously following religious rituals and rules while neglecting the more important aspects of faith such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Jesus emphasizes the need for inner transformation and genuine love for God and others, rather than just outward appearances. This passage serves as a reminder for believers to examine their own hearts and intentions, and to prioritize their relationship with God above all else.

The words of St. Monica, a revered saint known for her unwavering faith and relentless prayers for her son, St. Augustine, resonate with the message of Matthew 23:23-26. St. Monica’s life serves as a powerful example of living out true righteousness and devotion to God. She understood the importance of not just going through the motions of religion, but truly surrendering one’s heart and will to God. In her famous quote, St. Monica advises, “Do not grieve, for the Lord’s time is always near. Pray always, that you enter not into temptation.”

Reflecting on Matthew 23:23-26 and the wisdom of St. Monica, believers are challenged to examine their own lives and faith practices. Are we like the scribes and Pharisees, focused on outward displays of religious piety but lacking true righteousness in our hearts? Or are we, like St. Monica, willing to surrender our will to God, trusting in His timing and faithfulness? Let us strive to cultivate a deep and sincere relationship with God, prioritizing justice, mercy, and faithfulness in all that we do. As St. Monica reminds us, let us pray always and trust in the Lord’s nearness, even in times of trial and temptation.
