Jesus’ love and mercy extend to everyone

1Cor 12:12-14.27-31a; Psalm: 99; Lk 7:11-17

The story of the raising of the widow’s son in Luke 7:11-17 is a powerful demonstration of the compassion and power of Jesus Christ. In this passage, Jesus comes across a funeral procession for a young man who was the only son of a widow. His heart is moved with pity for the grieving mother, and he approaches the funeral bier and tells the young man to rise. Miraculously, the young man comes back to life, and Jesus presents him to his mother, restoring her son and her hope and joy.

This resurrection story serves as a reminder of Jesus’ abundant love and mercy for all people, especially those suffering and in deep need. It shows that no situation is beyond the reach of his healing touch and that he has the power to bring life out of death. Amid the widow’s sorrow and despair, Jesus offers her a new beginning and a reason to hope once again.

Saint Teresa of Avila once said, “Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things pass away, but God never changes.” This quote reminds us that even in the darkest moments of our lives, God is always present and never abandons us. Just as Jesus brought hope and joy to the grieving widow in Luke 7, he continues to bring light into our lives and offer us comfort and peace in times of struggle.

The story of raising the widow’s son also illustrates the importance of faith and trust in God’s providence. The widow’s faith in Jesus’ power to heal and restore her son is a testimony to her belief in the goodness and mercy of God. It serves as a reminder for us to have the same unwavering trust in God, even when faced with seemingly impossible situations.

The story of the widow’s son challenges us to reflect on our own lives and consider where we may need Jesus’ healing touch. It invites us to approach him with faith and openness, knowing that he is always ready to bring new life and hope into our hearts. Just as Jesus raised the widow’s son from death to life, he offered us the same gift of resurrection and redemption, inviting us to experience the fullness of his love and mercy.
