Jer 31:1-7; Psalm: Jer 31; Mt 15:21-28

God’s love is for all

In today’s Gospel, Jesus encounters a Canaanite woman who approaches him seeking healing for her daughter. At first, Jesus seems to ignore her, indicating that his mission is to the lost sheep of Israel. However, the woman persists in her faith, kneeling before him and declaring, “Lord, help me!” Despite her not being part of the chosen people of Israel, Jesus is moved by her faith and grants her request, to heal her daughter. This interaction demonstrates that God’s love is not limited to one group or nationality, but is available to all who believe and have faith.

This passage challenges the popular narrative at the time that God’s love and salvation were only available to the Jewish people. Jesus’ willingness to heal the Canaanite woman’s daughter highlights the universality of God’s love and grace. It shows that God’s love is not restricted by human boundaries or categories, but extends to all who come to him in faith. This message transcends cultural, ethnic, and religious differences, affirming that God’s love is for all.

The story of the Canaanite woman demonstrates the transformative power of faith and persistence. The woman’s boldness in approaching Jesus, her refusal to be dismissed, and her unwavering belief in His ability to heal her daughter, all serve as an inspiration to believers. This experience prompts us to reflect on our own perspectives toward those who may be considered outsiders or unworthy of God’s love and to acknowledge that God’s mercy and compassion are limitless. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate his example of inclusivity and love, reaching out to all people with the message of God’s grace and forgiveness.
