The call to be Christ’s disciples
Acts 20:28-38; Psalm: 67; Jn 17:11b-19
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today’s readings invite us to delve deeper into our faith and calling as Christ’s disciples. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles speaks to us about the responsibility we bear as shepherds of God’s flock. The reading from the Gospel of John offers us a glimpse into the heart of Jesus as He prays for His disciples. Together, these passages can guide us in our daily lives and our journey of faith.
In today’s first reading, St. Paul addresses the elders of the Church in Ephesus. He reminds them to be vigilant and to shepherd the Church of God, which Jesus obtained with His own blood. This powerful imagery calls us to reflect on the immense love and sacrifice of Jesus. As Pope Benedict XVI once said, “The Church is not an end in itself. It is a means to bring us to God.” We are called not only to be recipients of this love but also to share it with others. Each of us has a role to play in nurturing our communities, guiding others to Christ, and protecting the purity of the faith. Paul warns the elders that fierce wolves will come in among them, not sparing the flock. In our modern world, we too face challenges that threaten our faith. The distractions of daily life, social pressures, and the relentless tide of secularism can pull us away from our mission. Yet, we are called to stand firm in our beliefs. Just as the elders were urged to be vigilant, we too must be watchful and discerning in our lives. We must ask ourselves how we can best protect our families and our communities from these threats.
In John chapter 17, we find Jesus praying for His disciples before His passion. He asks the Father to keep them safe in His name and to sanctify them in the truth. This prayer is not only for the disciples of His time but for all of us who follow Him today. Jesus acknowledges the challenges His followers will face. He prays for our unity and strength as we navigate life in a world that often feels antagonistic to our faith.
As we reflect on this, let us remember that we are not alone. God walks with us, guiding us through the trials we encounter. Pope Benedict XVI reminds us that faith is a journey. It is not merely a set of beliefs but a living relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship calls us to action. How can we embody this faith in our daily lives? How can we be shepherds in our own right? It begins by living out our faith with authenticity and courage. It may mean reaching out to those in need, standing up for the truth, or simply offering a listening ear to someone who is struggling. As we leave here today, let us take these reflections to heart. Let us remember the call to be vigilant stewards of our faith and to support one another on this journey. May we strive to share the love of Christ in our actions and words, living examples of His grace in a world that so desperately needs it. In closing, let us pray for the strength to be faithful shepherds in our own lives. May we always seek to bring others closer to the heart of Christ, fulfilling our mission as His disciples. Amen.
