The call to share our faith amidst a world filled with confusion and uncertainty
Reflection on Acts 17:15, 22–18:1; Psalm: 148; John 16:12-15
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, in today’s readings, we are invited to explore the depths of our relationship with the Holy Spirit and the call to share our faith amidst a world filled with confusion and uncertainty. In Acts chapter 17, we find Saint Paul in Athens, a city bustling with diverse beliefs and philosophies. He stands before the Areopagus, a gathering of the city’s intellectual elite, and he proclaims the Gospel with boldness and clarity.
Paul observes the many altars dedicated to various gods and recognizes a deep yearning for something greater. He seizes this opportunity to introduce them to the true God, the God who created the universe and desires a personal relationship with each one of us. As he speaks, he reflects the words of Saint Augustine, who once said, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” Paul understood that the Athenians were searching for meaning, just as many today search for answers in a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming. His message invites us to reflect on our own hearts. Are we truly resting in God? Are we allowing His truth to guide our lives?
The Gospel of John expands on this theme, as Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure. He tells them that there is much more He wishes to share, but they cannot bear it all yet. He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, who will guide them into all truth. This is a powerful reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to work in our lives today, revealing the truths of God’s love and wisdom in ways we may not yet fully understand. As we engage in prayer, we open ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, we develop a deeper relationship with God, allowing Him to illuminate our understanding. In our daily lives, let us not shy away from seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance. In moments of doubt or confusion, invite the Spirit into your heart and mind. Ask for clarity and strength in your decisions.
As we reflect on these passages, let us remember that our faith calls us to be witnesses in our own communities. Just as Paul shared the Good News with the Athenians, we too are called to share our faith in our families, workplaces, and with those we encounter. This is not always easy, but we have the promise of the Holy Spirit, who emboldens us and equips us for this mission. Brothers and sisters, let us take inspiration from these scriptures and the lives of the saints. Let us be willing to engage with those around us, to listen to their stories, and to share the hope we have in Christ. May we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth, illuminating our paths and empowering us to live out our faith authentically. As we leave this place today, let us carry with us the message of love and truth that our God has for each of us. Let us be vessels of His Spirit, sharing His light in a world that so desperately needs it. Amen.
