Priorities and commitments to follow Christ
Job 9:1-12.14-16; Psalm: 87; Lk 9:57-62
In today’s Gospel, Jesus encounters three individuals who express a desire to follow him. As I reflect on this passage, I am reminded of the challenges and sacrifices that come with being a disciple of Christ. The first man tells Jesus that he will follow him wherever he goes, but Jesus warns him that following him means giving up material comforts and security. This reminds us that true discipleship requires a willingness to let go of our own desires and trust in God’s plan for our lives.
The second man offers to follow Jesus after he has tended to his family obligations. Jesus responds by emphasizing the urgency of his mission, saying that anyone who puts his hand on the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God. This highlights the importance of prioritizing our relationship with God above all else, even our familial responsibilities. It challenges us to reevaluate our own commitments and consider whether we are truly putting God first in our lives.
The third man expresses a desire to follow Jesus but asks to first say goodbye to his family. Jesus responds by saying that anyone who puts his hand on the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God. This reminds us that following Christ requires wholehearted commitment and a willingness to let go of the past. It challenges us to let go of anything that may hold us back from fully embracing God’s will for our lives.
Today, we celebrate the memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels. I am reminded of the role of our guardian angels in guiding and protecting us on our spiritual journey. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that each person has a guardian angel who watches over us and helps us to grow in faith and virtue. Our guardian angels are entrusted by God to assist us in following His Will and navigating the challenges of life. They offer us guidance, protection, and encouragement as we strive to live out our faith and follow Jesus.
Today Gospel challenges us to reevaluate our priorities and commit ourselves wholeheartedly to following Christ. It reminds us of the sacrifices and challenges that come with discipleship and calls us to trust in God’s plan for our lives. As we embark on this journey, we can take comfort in knowing that our guardian angels are watching over us, guiding us, and protecting us each step of the way. May we continue to seek their intercession and follow their lead as we strive to grow in faith and love for God.
