‘A Sister’s Sacrifice, a Diocese’s Joy’: Kengtung Celebrates New Deacon

The Kengtung Catholic Diocese celebrated the diaconate ordination of seminarian Paul Lo Ah Gar on October 17, 2026, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with Bishop John Saw Yaw Han presiding.
Priests, the deacon’s parents and relatives, and faithful from across the diocese filled the cathedral for the ceremony. The new deacon is a native of Wan Pain Village under St. Stephen’s Parish. His parents are Mr. Jacomo Ah Cha and Mrs. Lucia Bu Mu, and he is the eldest of five siblings.
‘A New Deacon to Serve the Diocese’
During the Mass, the Bishop first invited all the faithful to thank God for bestowing a new deacon to serve the Kengtung Diocese. He then clearly explained the duties of a deacon, stating that a deacon is called to assist the priest during Holy Mass, read and proclaim the Sacred Scriptures, and care for and encourage the sick.
Bishop John shared that he had known the deacon closely since he first arrived in the Kengtung Diocese four years ago. He noted that the seminarian had faced many difficulties in his studies during his time in the seminary.
As the eldest son, he had worried about his mother’s health and family affairs, and there were numerous challenges in pursuing his vocation. When asked about the family’s wishes, his parents and siblings encouraged him to move forward without hesitation.

A Sister’s Silent Sacrifice
The Bishop noted that one of the deacon’s younger sisters chose to work to support the family’s needs and education—even though there were others willing to help. He expressed his deep respect, pride, and gratitude for her sacrifice and dedication.
Bishop John emphasized, “becoming a missionary is not just a matter of one person’s sacrifice, but is of great value because parents, relatives, and villagers all share in the sacrifice and self-denial.”
He urged the deacon to cherish this hard-earned life throughout his journey and to walk it well. When facing future difficulties in his vocational life, he should draw strength from those who sacrificed for him and never give up easily.

Relying on the Holy Spirit and Mary
The Bishop encouraged him to always rely on the Holy Spirit, who has been the driving force since the beginning of his vocation, and to move forward with the help of Mother Mary.
He also encouraged all pastoral workers to draw inspiration from those who have served before them, as everyone carries and overcomes their own challenges in mission work.
Bishop John expressed special gratitude to everyone who supported and helped the deacon on his path to serving the Church.
During the Mass, the Bishop presented the deacon with daily prayer books and the Holy Scripture.
Following the Mass, the deacon’s parents and relatives provided breakfast for all who came to offer their prayers and blessings—a simple meal shared in joy and thanksgiving for a son, a brother, and now a deacon of the Church.
