‘You Are Not Alone’: Kalay Diocese Honors Catechists with Gifts and Gratitude

The Feast of Catechists was celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kalaymyo on World Mission Sunday, October 18, 2026, under the leadership of Bishop Felix Lian Khen Thang, as the Diocese of Kalay honored catechists serving in every parish across the diocese.
At St. Mary’s Cathedral, the celebration took place after the World Mission Sunday Mass and was presided over by Msgr. John Deng Cin Khup, Rector of the cathedral. The youth led the program, which featured a reflection on the mission of catechists, songs of appreciation, the presentation of gifts, and fellowship among priests, catechists, youth, children, and parishioners.

‘The Vital Role of Catechists’
Rev. Fr. James Lian Sian Kham, Associate Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Cathedral, delivered a short talk highlighting the vital role of catechists in the life and mission of the Church. He emphasized their responsibility to teach catechism to children, nurture their faith, and help pass on Christian values to the younger generation.
The youth and children attending catechism classes expressed their appreciation through special songs, their young voices filling the cathedral with gratitude for those who guide them in faith.

Generous Gifts from a Grateful Community
Gifts were presented to the catechists by various parish groups and individuals, including the Monica and Joachim groups, youth, children, the parish community, the Quatre group such as St. Luke, St. Mark, St. Matthew, and individual benefactors.
The catechists were particularly delighted by the generosity of the faithful, who offered not only financial gifts but also bags of rice to support them and their families. These gifts reflected the community’s appreciation for the catechists’ dedication and service—a tangible reminder that their often-hidden work is seen and valued.

‘I Apologize for My Shortcomings’
Speaking on behalf of the eight catechists serving at the cathedral parish, Catechist Stephan Gin Sian Khai expressed gratitude to the priests and faithful for their encouragement and generosity.
He also spoke humorously about the challenges of balancing family responsibilities with his ministry as a catechist, acknowledging that these demands sometimes make it difficult to fulfill his duties to the satisfaction of the parish community. He apologized for any shortcomings and pledged renewed commitment to serving the Church.

His honest words resonated with many catechists present, who understand the daily struggle of juggling work, family, and ministry—often without complaint or recognition.

A Joyful Conclusion
The celebration concluded with a joyful gathering in which priests, catechists, youth, children, and parishioners shared fellowship and celebrated the occasion together. The sounds of laughter and conversation filled the air as the community honored those who dedicate their lives to passing on the faith.
The event highlighted the important contribution of catechists to the Church’s mission of evangelization, particularly through the Christian formation of children and the strengthening of faith within parish communities.
For the catechists of Kalaymyo, the Feast of Catechists was more than a celebration—it was a reminder that they are not alone in their mission. The Church sees their sacrifices, appreciates their dedication, and stands with them as they continue the vital work of nurturing faith in the hearts of the young.
As the day concluded, the catechists returned to their homes and parishes carrying not only bags of rice and gifts but also the gratitude of a community that recognizes the sacred calling they have answered.
