‘To Serve, Not to Be Served’: Two Deacons Ordained in Pathein

The Diocese of Pathein joyfully celebrated the Diaconate Ordination of two candidates during the Holy Mass held at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at St. Peter Cathedral.
The solemn celebration was attended by numerous priests, religious brothers and sisters from various congregations, catechists, family members and relatives of the ordinands, as well as many faithful from different communities. United in faith and prayer, they gathered to witness this special moment in the lives of the two ordinands and to pray for them as they took another important step in their vocation.

‘A Joyful Day Filled with God’s Grace’
In his homily, Bishop Henry Eikhlein reflected on the day’s Scripture readings, calling it a special day filled with joy and grace—not only for the two brothers to be ordained but also for their families, the Church, and the entire People of God.
“It is a day of great thanksgiving because God’s love and mercy endure forever,” the Bishop said.

He emphasized that being called to serve God is not a personal achievement, a matter of prestige, or a position of authority. “Rather, it is a gift freely given by God,” he said. “To receive this calling means being invited to generously dedicate one’s life to God and His people.”

‘Jesus Did Not Come to Be Served’
Bishop Henry described the qualities of a true servant of the Church: faith, wisdom, humility, and love. He reminded the ordinands that serving God is not about seeking personal dignity, recognition, or authority, but about serving others with love and compassion.
“I encourage the two brothers who are to be ordained as Deacons today to give greater importance to the responsibility of serving others rather than focusing on their duties and privileges,” he said.

Throughout their ministry, he urged them to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, the perfect example of humble service. “Jesus Christ did not come to be served, but to serve. In the same way, you are called to proclaim the Word of God, carry out His mission with love, and serve His people with generous hearts.”

‘Trust in God’s Grace’
To remain faithful to their calling, Bishop Henry encouraged the deacons to persevere in prayer and maintain a holy way of life. “Do not rely solely on your own strength and abilities, but place your trust in God’s grace,” he said.

He acknowledged that difficulties, challenges, and trials will come, but urged them to continue serving God with confidence and a joyful heart.
“May the Holy Spirit guide and accompany you throughout your journey of ministry,” the Bishop prayed. “May our Blessed Mother Mary lovingly protect and intercede for you throughout your lives. May your entire lives become a living witness to God’s everlasting love, mercy, and faithfulness.”

The New Deacons
The newly ordained deacons are Deacon Michael Zin Min Htut from Pan Kuu Parish and Deacon Charles Kyaw Yan Naing Soe from Chanthargone Parish, both belonging to the Diocese of Pathein.
Deacon Michael is the son of Georgy U Tin Aaung and Catherine Daw Kyinthein, while Deacon Charles is the son of Martine U Thein Soe and Florence Daw Hnin Hnin Lwin.
As the celebration concluded, the faithful went back with hearts full of gratitude, having witnessed two young men take a decisive step toward the priesthood. For Deacon Michael and Deacon Charles, the journey continues—but they go forward with the prayers of a diocese, the love of their families, and the promise of Christ’s presence as they embrace their calling to serve, not to be served.
