Myanmar’s Youth Embrace Hope and Kingship in Dual World Youth Day Celebrations

Young Catholics across Myanmar celebrated the 40th World Youth Day on November 23, gathering in two major events that emphasized their role as heirs to Christ the King and the future of the nation.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) hosted a national celebration, drawing approximately 70 young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds. For many, it was a rare opportunity for connection. “Many are migrant youth unfamiliar with Yangon,” organizers noted, making the event a vital point of spiritual fellowship and unity.

The Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Bishop Lucas Jeimphaung Dau Ze, Chairman of the National Youth Commission. In his homily, he reframed the concept of kingship for a modern generation, telling the youth that through baptism, they become “sons and daughters of the King of the Universe.”

He drew a compelling parallel from the story of King David, calling it a “DIY—Do It Yourself” call. “Though chosen by God, David still had to step forward in faith to be anointed king,” he said, urging the young attendees to actively choose God and cooperate with His grace. He reminded them that “behind difficulties lies success,” and that embracing Christ allows them to rise, bringing joy to their families and communities.

Following the Mass, Rev. Fr. Bosco Bo Bo, SDB, led the young people in songs and offered uplifting encouragement.

The celebration in Yangon Archdiocese was a larger, vibrant affair, with about 500 youth filling St. Augustine Church in Kamayut Township. The event, organized by the Yangon Archdiocesan Youth Commission (YAC), blended prayer, music, and motivational talks.

Msgr. Saw Francis, Vicar General, echoed the timeless words of St. John Paul II, telling the congregation, “Do not be afraid.” He acknowledged the dedicated work of Rev. Fr. Mercian Thet Kyaw, the YAC director, who continues to serve youth amidst the country’s challenges.

Fr. Mercian Thet Kyaw, in his talk, encouraged the youth to witness boldly for Christ, drawing strength from Psalm 23—God’s overflowing goodness even in the midst of trials. He reminded them that the Apostles themselves witnessed with fear yet continued because of hope in Christ.

The event burst with energy as youth groups from various parishes performed songs and dances. Fr. Albert Myo Lwin, Parish Priest of Holy Innocent Church, South Dagon, encouraged the youth to journey together during this Jubilee of Hope, saying, “With faith and hope, we are to be future stars.”

A keynote address by Mr. Joseph Lopez, a Malaysian CEO, provided practical wisdom. He outlined four pillars for success: “Vision with Faith,” “Discipline and Excellence,” “Integrity and Character,” and “Resilience and Adaptability.”
