Bishop Peter Hla Retires, Successor Steps In for Pekhon Diocese in Myanmar

Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop Peter Hla from leading the Catholic Diocese of Pekhon in Myanmar, the Holy See announced on February 2, 2026.
Bishop Hla is succeeded by Bishop Felice Ba Htoo, who had been serving as the diocese’s coadjutor bishop—a role designed to ensure a smooth transition.

Bishop Felice Ba Htoo was appointed coadjutor for the Pekhon Diocese by Pope Francis on March 25, 2024. He received his episcopal ordination on June 29, 2024, at Santa Maria Church, in Phekhon Diocese, conferred by Archbishop Basilio Athai of Taunggyi Archdiocese.

The change in leadership marks a planned transition for the diocese, with Bishop Felice, now familiar with the community after nearly two years as coadjutor, taking on full pastoral responsibility.
