Bishop Stanislaus Min Ko Succeeds Bishop Justin Saw Min Theid in Hpa-An Diocese

Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop Justin Saw Min Theid from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Hpa-An after 17 years of service, the Vatican announced on March 26.
Bishop Stanislaus Min Ko, who has been serving as Coadjutor Bishop of Hpa-An, officially succeeded him as the new bishop of the diocese. The announcement was made at 12:00 noon Rome time (5:30 p.m. Myanmar time).

A Gathering in Prayer
As the announcement time approached, bishops, priests, religious, and faithful gathered at the Cathedral of Hpa-An to pray for peace. The assembly recited the Prayer for Peace composed by Pope Francis, which calls upon God to end violence, heal divisions, and guide humanity toward reconciliation.

At exactly 5:30 p.m. Myanmar time, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Anselm Nay Zaw Oo, publicly read the official decree announcing the resignation of Bishop Justin and the succession of Bishop Stanislaus.
The faithful then prayed the Holy Rosary for both bishops. A special prayer followed, entrusting their pastoral mission to God. The celebration continued with a hymn of thanksgiving and concluded with the episcopal blessing imparted by Bishop Stanislaus Min Ko.

A Diocese of Growth
The Diocese of Hpa-An was established on January 24, 2009. Under Bishop Justin Saw Min Theid’s 17 years of leadership, the diocese experienced significant growth.
During his service, he oversaw the construction of parish churches, clergy residences, convents for religious sisters, and boarding houses. His pastoral efforts, together with divine providence, bore much fruit in the life of the diocese.

New Bishop’s Message
In his message, Bishop Stanislaus Min Ko acknowledged the challenges ahead as he assumes responsibility for the diocese.
“From now onwards, I am entrusted with the Diocese of Hpa-An and its faithful. I will carry out this mission with your prayers, support, and God’s providence,” he said.
He noted ongoing challenges such as transportation difficulties and a limited number of missionaries. Currently, the diocese is served by 23 priests, around 40 religious brothers and sisters, and approximately 70 catechists.
Despite being small in size, the diocese remains vibrant, sustained by the faith and collaboration of its people.

Gratitude and Support
The faithful of Hpa-An Diocese expressed heartfelt gratitude for the service of Bishop Justin and pledged their prayers and support for Bishop Stanislaus as he begins his ministry as the new Ordinary.
They entrusted both bishops and the entire diocese to God’s continued guidance and protection.
