Pathein Diocese Opens New Academic Year of the Seminary with Trinity Sunday Mass, Blesses Seminarians’ Journey

As the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity dawned on May 31, 2026, the Diocese of Pathein officially inaugurated the 2026–2027 academic year of the minor seminary of Pathein Diocese with a solemn Eucharistic celebration at Sacred Heart Church in Mayanchaung, entrusting seminarians, teachers, and families to God’s providential care.

The 7:00 a.m. Mass brought together students in uniforms, parents clutching school bags, teachers, priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay faithful—all seeking blessings for the months of learning ahead.

Msgr. Pius Win Than presided over the celebration, joined by three concelebrating priests. In a symbolic gesture that captured the congregation’s attention, several items were presented during the offertory procession, each carrying a message for the new academic year.

A candle was offered first, representing the light of Christ that dispels darkness. “Education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge,” the assembly was reminded, “but also a journey toward truth, wisdom, and enlightenment.”

The Holy Bible followed, signifying God’s Word as the ultimate guide for life. A school bag was then presented, reflecting the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities that accompany the pursuit of education. Finally, a flowerpot was offered, its blooming flowers symbolizing the students themselves—flourishing when nurtured by faith, education, and proper guidance.

In his homily, Msgr. Pius Win Than spoke directly to the seminarians filling the pews.

“The new academic year has begun,” he said. “We study not only to gain knowledge for ourselves but also to share that knowledge with others. Education enables us to contribute meaningfully to our communities and to the mission of the Church.”

He urged seminarians to recognize their vital role within the Church. “The Church needs dedicated young men and women who are willing to serve. Without committed individuals, the mission of the Church faces many challenges. The Church invites you to use your talents generously, to make the most of this academic year, and to become people who can serve both God and humanity.”

Reflecting on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, Msgr. Pius emphasized the central mystery of Christian faith—one God in three Divine Persons. He reminded the congregation that every prayer begins with the Sign of the Cross.

“This simple gesture is a profound profession of faith and should never be done thoughtlessly,” he said. “It reminds us of our baptism and our identity as Christians.”

Drawing from the day’s Gospel, he recalled God’s immense love: “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.”
