The 6:30 a.m. Holy Mass, presided over by Msgr. Pius Win Than alongside eight concelebrating priests, drew dozens of catechists, brothers, sisters, and lay faithful who gathered to pray for wisdom and perseverance. “A good beginning leads to a successful end,” the opening reflection noted, calling for systematic and enthusiastic participation in the year ahead.

In his homily, Msgr. Pius Win Than delivered a pointed challenge drawn from Pope Paul VI: “When we teach people, we should teach them what they need, not what they want.” He contrasted that with the example of Mother Teresa, who famously said, “I don’t pray for success, I pray for faithfulness.”

Citing St. Paul’s second letter to Timothy, the monsignor emphasized the apostle’s enduring words: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.” He told the assembly that these lines speak directly to catechists today—calling them to persevere through ridicule and criticism, just as saints and priests have done before them.

The Gospel warning against the Pharisees, who preached merely to impress others, served as another anchor. “If you preach only to please people, your preaching is not true,” Msgr. Pius said. “So whether people like it or not, accept it or not, preach with faith.”

He urged students to study diligently over the two-year program. “Study all the subjects to the best of your ability,” he said. “Only then will you be able to share them with others, and God will bless you too.”
