The Catholic Archdiocese of Mandalay celebrated the 6th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on August 1, 2026, with a solemn Mass and honor ceremony at the Sacred Heart Cathedral of Mandalay Archdiocese.

The event, organized by the archdiocesan Laity and Family Commission, brought together elderly parishioners and family members from across local parishes. The gathering recognized the vital role senior citizens play in faith communities and family life.

Eucharistic Celebration and Papal Message

The commemorative Mass began at 7:00 AM. Three priests concelebrated the liturgy, with Rev. Fr. Paul Thet Khaing presiding. Prayers were offered specifically for senior citizens present at the service, as well as for those unable to attend due to health or mobility constraints.

Following the Mass, organizers held an appreciation ceremony honoring the elderly participants. Attendees received commemorative gifts and financial support. Leaders also read aloud the official message from Pope Francis released for this year’s global observance.

Clergy Highlight Dignity and Guidance of Elders

During their addresses, clergy members emphasized the spiritual and moral duty to honor parents and grandparents. They urged younger generations to reject a culture that views the elderly as a burden.

Rev. Fr. Paul Thet Khaing reminded the congregation of the Fourth Commandment. He emphasized that honoring parents is a central tenet of faith. He cautioned against neglecting elderly family members, noting that their presence in the home remains a direct blessing from God.

Rev. Fr. Alysious Nay Myo Swe, Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, encouraged senior citizens to recognize their ongoing value within their households. He stated that even when physical limitations set in, the presence of grandparents provides essential spiritual strength to children and grandchildren. He urged elders to pass down their faith as the greatest inheritance possible.

Rev. Fr. Peter Kyi Maung, Coordinator of RVA Myanmar Service and Chancellor of the Mandalay Archdiocese, likened grandparents to the deep, stabilizing roots of a family tree. He said they nurture unity, forgiveness, and peace through life’s hardships. He expressed gratitude to elders for serving as repositories of life wisdom and for guiding younger generations toward faith through continued prayer.

Theme and Future Initiatives

Speaking on behalf of the organizing leadership, U Soe Naing noted that the theme selected by Pope Francis for this year’s commemoration was drawn from Isaiah 49:15—”I will never forget you.” He explained that the theme reassures the elderly of God’s unchanging love. It counters the isolation and abandonment many senior citizens experience globally.

Established by Pope Francis in 2021, the annual observance aims to foster intergenerational solidarity. It builds an enduring tradition of respect for senior citizens. While organizers noted that home-visitation ministries were limited this year, plans are underway to expand outreach programs to homebound elders in upcoming years.

Voices from the Community

Reflecting on the celebration, parishioner U Win Naing expressed gratitude for the event. He noted that the gathering and the words of encouragement from clergy provided deep spiritual comfort. The celebration renewed fellowship among senior members of the community.

The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly continues to grow as an important moment for the Catholic Church. It recognizes the wisdom, faith, and enduring contributions of older generations. For the Archdiocese of Mandalay, Saturday’s celebration served as both a tribute and a call to action—a reminder that the elderly are not forgotten, but cherished as living treasures of faith and family.
