Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (1887–1968), born Francesco Forgione and widely known as Padre Pio, was an Italian Capuchin priest and mystic famous for bearing the stigmata—the visible wounds of Christ’s crucifixion—which bled continuously for 50 years until disappearing at his death. Based at the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo from 1916 onward, he spent long hours in the confessional, drawn to by millions for his extraordinary spiritual gifts of reading souls and miraculous healing, while also founding the state-of-the-art Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital in 1956. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002, he remains one of the most venerated modern saints, remembered for his famous spiritual rule: “Pray, Hope and Don’t worry”.
