Clothed in Christ: The True Blessedness of Hearing and Doing
Gal 3:22-29, Psalm: 104, Lk 11:27-28
My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
The Word of God today presents us with a profound mystery and a simple truth. Saint Paul tells us that we are all children of God through faith, that we have been clothed with Christ, and that in Him there is no distinction between Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female. In the Gospel, Jesus declares that true blessedness is not found in biological relationship, but in hearing the word of God and observing it. This is the heart of the Christian life: to be clothed with Christ and to live as His disciples.
In his Letter to the Galatians, Saint Paul writes, “For through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus.” He explains that the law was a disciplinarian, a guide to lead us to Christ. But once faith has come, we are no longer under the law. We are all children of God through faith. And the sign of this new identity is baptism: “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” This is a beautiful image. We are not just followers of Christ; we are clothed with Christ. His righteousness becomes our righteousness. His identity becomes our identity. There is no distinction between Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female. We are all one in Christ Jesus. And we are heirs to the promise made to Abraham.
In the Gospel of Luke, a woman in the crowd raises her voice and says, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” Jesus responds, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Jesus is not rejecting His mother; He is elevating the call of discipleship. Mary is blessed not only because she gave birth to Jesus, but because she heard the word of God and kept it. She is the first and greatest disciple. Her “yes” to God is the model for all of us. True blessedness is not a matter of genealogy; it is a matter of obedience. It is hearing the word of God and acting on it.
The connection between the readings is the call to a new identity and a new way of living. We are clothed with Christ. We are one in Him. And we are called to hear the word of God and observe it. This is the blessedness of the disciple. It is not a passive inheritance; it is an active response. It is not a matter of status; it is a matter of obedience.
Pope Saint John Paul II, reflecting on this Gospel, said, “Mary is the model of all who hear the word of God and keep it.” Pope Francis has said, “The true family of Jesus is those who do the will of the Father, who listen to His word and put it into practice.” And Saint Augustine, contemplating the words of Jesus, wrote, “Mary was more blessed in receiving the faith of Christ than in conceiving the flesh of Christ.”
What does this mean for us? We are children of God through faith. We are clothed with Christ in baptism. We are called to hear the word of God and observe it. We are called to be like Mary, who said “yes” to God and lived in obedience to His will. We are called to be one in Christ, without distinction of race, class, or gender.
Today, let us examine our hearts. Are we living as children of God, clothed with Christ? Are we hearing the word of God and observing it? Are we living in unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ? Let us ask the Lord to give us the grace to live as His disciples, to hear His word, and to put it into practice. For we are all one in Christ Jesus, and we are heirs to the promise. Amen.
May God bless you all!
