New Convent Brings Hope and Unity to Rural Village in Dual Celebration

A rural Catholic community of The Phyu village, Taungdwingyi township, in Mandalay Archdiocese celebrated a twofold blessing on December 4, merging its annual Church festival with the joyous opening of a new convent for the Sisters of Little Way of St. Therese (LWST).
The solemn Mass at Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary Church, led by Fr. John Aye Kyaw, set a theme of authentic unity. He challenged the faithful to move beyond hypocrisy, stating that true cleanliness of heart is shown in love and support for the needy. “That is the Christian belief; that is the Christian way of life,” he said.

The highlight was the official opening of the new convent building, a project born from community need and collaboration. Parish priest Fr. Peter Htwal Sei Myint explained that combining the events was a practical and meaningful decision for the farming village, creating a lasting memory for the parish and the four arriving sisters.

The sisters’ presence was hailed as a transformative moment for the small mission. “We felt as if we had gained reliable good mothers for the mission,” said Joachim U Soe Min, Secretary of the Parish Council. He emphasized that a mission is only complete with a church, a priest’s residence, and a convent.
Local parishioners expressed particular hope for the village’s youth. Veronica Mai Cho Nwe Lwin noted the sisters would help children become “more obedient, well-mannered” and grow in faith.

Augustine Salai U Khin Maung Chin saw great value for the new generation and hoped the sisters would lead in establishing pre-schools.

The sisters, invited by the Archbishop of Mandalay, have immediately begun their work. Sr. Ruth Man Lun Niang confirmed they have already started a pre-school and a free clinic for the village. Sr. Emily Man Tung Naing shared her initial apprehensions about the new assignment but resolved to do her best to help both children and adults understand religious teachings better.

Already integrated into parish life, the sisters are leading prayers, assisting with church matters, and visiting homes with the Legion of Mary. Their arrival marks a significant step in strengthening the spiritual and social fabric of The Phyu Village.
