The Catholic Archdiocese of Mandalay marked the 6th anniversary of the establishment of the Catholic Women’s Commission with a commemorative Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 8:00 AM.

The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Spiritual Director Fr. Paul Thet Khaing, alongside clergy, religious sisters, and members of various religious groups from across the diocese.

A Growing Movement

The commission was founded on August 15, 2020, by Sr. Assumpta Shwe, RGS, Head of the Catholic Women’s Commission of Myanmar, under the pastoral guidance of Archbishop Marco Tin Win of Mandalay Archdiocese.

Starting with approximately 20 members, the commission has expanded significantly over the past six years to over 100 members across 12 parish groups. These include units in Amarapura, Pyin Oo Lwin, Zawgyi, Myit Nge, and Mrauk Kaing.

Homily on Women’s Role in the Church

During his homily, Fr. Aloysius Nay Myo Swe emphasized the principles of servant leadership and the vital contribution of women in the Church.

“When serving others, you must be guided by the spirit of love, humility, and patience,” Fr. Aloysius stated. “The roles of women are powerful; strong women are greatly respected in the history of the Church and the world. Today, women work side by side with men in many capacities. You have many talents and strengths to bear witness to your faith.”

Fr. Paul Thet Khaing highlighted the role of women as primary educators in the faith, describing them as “domestic missionaries.” He noted that mothers set the foundation for future generations. He stated that being part of the commission carries a responsibility akin to a missionary calling to lead families by example, following the model of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A Message on True Humility

Addressing the assembly, Sr. Assumpta Shwe, RGS, outlined the mission of the nationwide organization to work in communion with bishops and clergy. She also reflected on the theological understanding of humility within church service.

“True humility is knowing yourself as you are and accepting yourself as you are—acknowledging both your strengths and limitations,” Sr. Assumpta remarked. “Only by knowing yourself truthfully can you effectively serve the Church.”

Looking to the Future

Reflecting on the milestone, Daw Nilar, Chairperson of the Mandalay Catholic Women’s Commission, expressed gratitude for the progress achieved over the past six years. She reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to addressing areas of greater need within the diocese.

Director Freddy U Soe Naing commended the structural and spiritual growth of the commission since its inception. He underscored that while much of women’s service and prayer occurs behind the scenes, their contribution remains essential to the spiritual life of both families and the broader ecclesiastical community.

The 6th anniversary celebration served as both a moment of thanksgiving and a renewed commitment to the ongoing mission of the Catholic Women’s Commission in the Archdiocese of Mandalay.
