Mandalay Parish Honors Parents on the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne

Sacred Heart Cathedral of Mandalay Archdiocese hosted a special Parents’ Day celebration on July 26, honoring Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a solemn Mass and a program that brought the parish community together in gratitude and filial devotion.

The event commenced at 7:30 a.m. with a Holy Mass presided over by parish priest Fr. Aloysius Nay Myo Swe. Following the liturgy, the parish community organized a celebratory program that included paying traditional respects to elderly parents, offering gifts and financial support, and hosting honorific entertainment performances.

A Call to Parental Responsibility and Filial Devotion

In his homily, Fr. Nay Myo Swe underscored the vital role parents play in both family life and spiritual formation.

“As the saying goes, ‘The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world,'” Fr. Nay Myo Swe stated. “Parents serve as God’s representatives on earth. They must take great care in raising their children within a healthy, moral framework, and children must inherently value their parents’ sacrifice.”

The priest highlighted that a parent’s primary duty is spiritual guidance—nurturing children to love, trust, and rely on God. Turning to the younger generation, he called for deep filial respect and devotion.

“The greatest gift you can offer your parents is peace of mind—it is far more valuable than material wealth,” he emphasized, encouraging families to practice joint prayer and model their homes after the Holy Family. He also reminded congregants that those whose parents have passed away can honor their memory by living upright lives in accordance with their parents’ wishes.

Mr. Freddy Zaw Naing Win expressed deep gratitude for his parents’ sacrifices: “Parents are always our heroes. They are constantly forgiving, understanding, and self-sacrificing. Looking back, I feel remorseful for times I may not have treated them with enough care. They worked tirelessly to raise us, and now it is our turn to ensure their comfort and happiness.”

Mr. William Aung Phyo spoke on how entering the workforce deepened his appreciation for his parents: “Growing up under our parents’ protection, we rarely felt the weight of life’s hardships. It was only after stepping out into the world and facing daily struggles that I truly recognized how hard my parents fought for us.”

Rosaline Mi Mi Aung offered a poignant message of reconciliation: “I want to apologize for the times I spoke in anger or caused pain. My parents always responded with patience and grace, even when I was wrong. Moving forward, my goal is to care for them diligently and ensure they never have reason to shed a tear.”

Strengthening Pastoral and Family Bonds

The event was expanded this year following a decision by the parish pastoral council to foster stronger community and family connections. U Kyin Sein, Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council, explained the initiative’s broader objective: “We wanted to host a grander celebration this year not just as a one-time event, but as a lasting reminder. Children must treasure and care for their aging parents while they still have the time.”

Sister Geraldine reflected on her upbringing and paid tribute to her family: “The care, protection, and guidance from parents represent an irreplaceable love. I am deeply thankful to my parents for teaching me to walk with God from a young age, which paved the way for my vocation today.”
