For 35 years, the Catholic youth of St. Michael Parish in Hnaring of Hakha Diocese have upheld a cherished tradition: celebrating Parents’ and Elderly People’s Day with gifts, prayers, and heartfelt gratitude. On July 28, 2026, they continued that legacy, honoring more than 90 elderly residents of the parish community.

According to assistant parish priest Fr. Julian Sang, Parents’ Day is one of the biggest and most anticipated celebrations in Hnaring.

“People from other Christian denominations also take part in the event, especially the elderly people, who look forward to the celebration each year,” Fr. Julian said.

He explained that the Bible teaches people to respect the elderly, and the parish celebrates Parents’ Day to honor them, remind them that they are loved and remembered, and ask for their blessings. “The Church believes the blessings of the elderly are important,” he said, adding that the parish wants them to enjoy spending time in the parish on their special day.

Youth Fund Their Own Celebration

According to catechist William, the youth of St. Michael Church have organized the Parents’ Day celebration every year for the past 35 years. In previous years, people from Hnaring living abroad used to support the event. However, this year, the young people raised the funds themselves by doing construction work and removing weeds from local farmers’ fields.

Their labor reflects a deep commitment to honoring their elders, even in difficult times.

A Gift for Every Elderly Resident

Gregory Bawi Lian Sang, president of the Hnaring Catholic Youth Association (CYA), said there are more than 90 elderly people aged 65 and above in St. Michael Church. The youth prepared gifts for all of them, presenting them to those who attended the celebration and delivering gifts to those who could not come by visiting them at their homes.

“Before Parents’ Day, we always hold a novena prayer for the good health of our grandparents and parents,” Gregory said. “We also pray for those who have passed away, asking that they may rest in peace.”

A Small Parish with a Strong Faith

Hnaring has around 190 Catholic households. The local Catholic community under St. Michael Parish continues to receive pastoral care and support from eight catechists who serve across six villages.

The celebration was a reminder that even in a small community, acts of kindness can bring great joy. For the elderly residents of Hnaring, the youth’s annual tribute is more than a tradition—it is a testament that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved.
