The Sign of the Prophet and the Cost of Discipleship: Letting Go to Gain Everything

Ezek 24:15-24, Psalm: Dt 32, Mt 19:16-22

My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

There is a cost to following Jesus. And it often involves letting go of what we love most.

Ezekiel’s beloved wife—the “delight of his eyes”—is taken from him. And he is told not to mourn. It seems cruel. But it is a sign. Israel’s beloved Temple, their delight, would soon be destroyed. Surrender was required.

Then we meet the rich young man. He runs to Jesus, eager. “What must I do to gain eternal life?” Jesus looks at him with love—tender, genuine love—and says: “Sell what you have, give to the poor, and follow me.” The man walks away sad. He had many possessions. He could not let go.

What is your “delight of the eyes”? What do you cling to so tightly that it holds you back from Jesus? Maybe it’s your comfort, your reputation, your plans, even a relationship. These attachments can become idols.

Jesus doesn’t ask us to give things up to make us miserable. He asks because He wants to set us free. He wants to be our greatest treasure.

This week, look at your hands. What are you clutching? Hear Jesus say to you, with love: “Let it go. Trust me. I will give you everything.”

Letting go is hard. But in losing our lives, we find them. In surrendering, we gain everything. Amen.
