The Seal of the Spirit and the Sparrow’s Worth: Living in the Confidence of God’s Love

Eph 1:11-14, Psalm: 32, Lk 12:1-7

Memorial of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin

My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On this Memorial of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, the great apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Word of God invites us into a profound mystery of love and providence. Saint Paul speaks of the Holy Spirit as the “seal” and “pledge” of our inheritance. Jesus tells us that we are worth more than many sparrows. And Saint Margaret Mary, through her visions of the Sacred Heart, revealed to the world the burning love of Christ for each and every soul. Today, we are called to live in the confidence of that love.

In his Letter to the Ephesians, Saint Paul writes, “In Christ we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will.” Paul reveals that we have been “sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is the first installment of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s possession, to the praise of his glory.” The Holy Spirit is the seal—the mark of God’s ownership, the guarantee of our inheritance. We belong to God. We are His possession. This is not a burden; it is our dignity and our security. The Spirit within us is the down payment of eternal glory, the assurance that God will complete the work He has begun in us.

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus warns His disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees—hypocrisy. “Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known.” He tells them not to fear those who can kill the body, but to fear the One who has authority to cast into Gehenna. Yet, immediately after this warning, He offers profound comfort: “Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.” Jesus moves from warning to tenderness. The God who has authority over life and death is also the God who counts the hairs on our head. He is both Judge and Father. And His love for us is intimate and personal.

The connection between the readings is the assurance of God’s love and protection. Paul tells us we are sealed with the Spirit, marked as God’s own. Jesus tells us we are worth more than sparrows, known and loved by the Father. Saint Margaret Mary experienced this love in a profound way. Through her revelations of the Sacred Heart, she came to understand that God’s love is not a distant, abstract concept, but a burning, personal, and passionate love for each soul. She wrote, “Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, to testify its love.”

Pope Benedict XVI, reflecting on Saint Margaret Mary, said, “She reminds us that the heart of Christ is the source of all love and mercy.” Pope Francis has said, “The Lord never tires of forgiving; it is we who tire of asking for forgiveness.” And Saint Margaret Mary herself prayed, “O my God, I offer you my heart, and I ask you to give me your Heart, so that I may love you as you deserve to be loved.”

What does this mean for us? We are sealed with the Holy Spirit. We are marked as God’s own. We are worth more than many sparrows. The God who created the universe knows our name and loves us with an everlasting love. This is the confidence we are called to live in. This is the trust that casts out all fear. This is the peace that the world cannot give.

Today, let us examine our hearts. Do we live in the confidence of God’s love, or do we live in fear and anxiety? Do we trust that we are sealed with the Spirit, or do we doubt our worth? Let us ask Saint Margaret Mary to intercede for us, that we may come to know and love the Sacred Heart of Jesus more deeply, and that we may live each day in the joyful confidence of being loved by God. Amen.

May God bless you all!
