Catechism Teachers Receive Formation Training in Kalay Zone

More than 50 catechism teachers from across the Diocese of Kalay gathered for a three-day training from May 4–6 at Sacred Heart Church, aimed at strengthening systematic religious education for children.
The program was organized following a decision by the priests of Kalay Zone to improve catechetical formation throughout the diocese.

Opening Address: Teachers as Light
The opening session began with an address by Rev. Fr. Joseph Kap Tung Nung, Vicar Forane of Kalay Zone. He emphasized the importance of catechism teachers in the Church’s mission and encouraged participants to teach children with dedication, joy, and a missionary spirit.
“The catechism teachers are the light for our Diocese and for the whole Catholic Church,” he said, adding that zone-level training would greatly benefit future faith formation.
Practical Methods and New Books
The training sessions were led by Rev. Fr. Damian Zam Sian Dal, a doctor in Systematic Theology from KU Leuven. He provided practical methods for effective catechetical teaching, drawing from Vatican documents, theological studies, and personal pastoral experience.
Fr. Damian introduced several new catechism books produced for the diocese. He explained that different methods are needed when teaching children. “Some books need to be explained to the children, while others can be read by the children themselves,” he said.

“Teachers need to use methods such as reading together with the children, reading with rhythm like a song, and telling lessons like stories so that the children can memorize them more easily.”
The books were translated and produced by Fr. Damian along with Fr. John Hau Hawm Mang, Fr. Titus Zam Lian Pau, and other contributors. Participants were also introduced to the Catechism of the Catholic Church as an essential guide for faith education.
Wide Participation
Catechism teachers from various parishes participated, including St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kalay, St. Theresa’s Church in Tahan, Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Tazin, Sacred Heart Church in Phai, and St. Peter’s Church in Munlai.
The expenses for the training were covered by the Kalay Zone Fund.

Renewed Commitment
Organizers expressed hope that the training would strengthen catechetical ministry in the region and inspire teachers to continue nurturing the faith of young Catholics with renewed commitment and enthusiasm.
The three-day gathering concluded with a sense of mission, equipping teachers with practical tools and spiritual encouragement to serve as effective guides for the next generation of Catholics in the Diocese of Kalay.
