Rivers from the Sanctuary: The Temple of His Body and the Church of Living Stones

Ezek 47:1-2.8-9.12, Psalm: 45, 1Cor 3:9c-11.16-17, Jn 2:13-22

My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Today, the Church celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome—the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, the “mother and head of all churches.” Why do we celebrate a building? Because this building is a sign. It points to a deeper reality: the Church is not made of marble and mortar. She is made of living stones. And you are one of them.

The prophet Ezekiel sees a river flowing from the temple, bringing life wherever it goes. “Wherever the river flows, every living creature will live.” That river is the grace of God, flowing from His sanctuary into a thirsty world. That temple was a building. But the river is not confined to the building. It flows out to the world.

Saint Paul tells us, “You are God’s building… You are God’s temple, and the Spirit of God dwells in you.” The building in Rome is a sign of the building in your soul. The Lateran Basilica reminds us that the Church is not a museum of saints but a hospital for sinners. It reminds us that the Temple is not a place but a Person—Jesus Christ. And through Him, we become the dwelling place of God.

In the Gospel, Jesus cleanses the Temple. He drives out the money changers and the merchants. “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” Then He says something shocking: “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” John tells us, “He was speaking about the temple of his body.” Jesus is the true Temple. And when He dies and rises, that Temple is not rebuilt in stone. It is multiplied in His Body, the Church. In you.

Pope Francis has said, “The Church is not a fortress. She is a field hospital. She is the tent of meeting where God’s mercy meets human misery.” Saint Augustine, reflecting on the Temple, wrote, “The temple of God is the whole Church, and the temple of God is every soul in whom the Spirit dwells.”

What does this mean for us? It means that every time you go to Confession, you are cleansing the Temple. Every time you receive the Eucharist, you are being built into the Temple. Every time you forgive, you are making the river flow. The Lateran Basilica is a reminder that you are not a stranger. You are the sanctuary. The river of grace flows from the altar into your daily life—into your kitchen, your office, your struggles, your relationships.

Today, let us examine our hearts. Is there any “marketplace” that needs to be cleansed? Any sin, any attachment, any distraction that has turned the Temple of your soul into a den of thieves? Let us ask the Lord to cleanse us, to fill us with His Spirit, and to make us living stones in His Church.

For the river is flowing. And wherever it flows, there is life. Amen. May God bless you all!
