The Dawn of Salvation: The Hidden Greatness of the Virgin’s Birth

My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On this beautiful Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church invites us to celebrate a birth that is hidden in the quiet of history but resounds through all eternity. The prophet Micah foretold that from Bethlehem, a small and insignificant village, would come the Ruler of Israel. The Gospel of Matthew traces the genealogy of Jesus, naming the ancestors of the Messiah, and tells us of the miraculous conception of the Lord through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The prophet Micah speaks of a ruler whose origin is “from ancient times.” He will stand and shepherd His flock by the strength of the Lord. He will be “great to the ends of the earth.” This prophecy finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. But the birth of the Messiah depends on the birth of the woman who will bear Him. Mary is the “daughter of Zion,” the humble and pure one, through whom the Shepherd and Ruler of Israel will come.

The Gospel of Matthew gives us the genealogy of Jesus. It is a long list of names—some holy, some sinful, some forgotten. But through all of them, God’s plan unfolds. He works through the ordinary, the unexpected, even the flawed. And at the center of this genealogy is Mary. The Gospel declares, “When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.” Joseph, a righteous man, planned to divorce her quietly, but an angel appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Mary’s birth is a preparation for the birth of the Savior. She is the dawn that announces the coming of the Sun. She is the Ark of the New Covenant, the dwelling place of God among us. Her birth is not a random event; it is a moment of hope, a sign that God is faithful to His promises. As the fathers of the Church teach, “The birth of Mary is the dawn of salvation.”

Pope Benedict XVI, reflecting on the Nativity of Mary, said, “Her birth is a mystery of hope. She is the one who brings the light of Christ into the world.” Pope Francis has said, “Mary’s birth is a gift of God to humanity. She is the Mother of the Church, the one who leads us to her Son.” And Saint Augustine, contemplating the significance of Mary’s birth, wrote, “Mary was chosen from the beginning. Her birth was a preparation for the salvation of the world.”

What does this mean for us? Mary’s birth reminds us that God works through the humble and the hidden. He chooses the lowly to accomplish His greatest works. He does not abandon His people; He prepares the way for redemption. Mary is the proof that God is faithful. She is the assurance that our hopes are not in vain.

This week, let us turn to Mary, the Child of Promise, and ask her to intercede for us. Let us imitate her humility, her purity, and her openness to God’s will. And let us rejoice in the dawn of salvation, for the light of Christ is about to break upon the world. Amen.
