Dry Bones and the Greatest Commandment: Living the Faith That Saves

Ezek 37:1-14, Psalm: 106, Mt 22:34-40

Memorial of Saint Pius X, Pope

My dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Have you ever felt spiritually dry? Lifeless? Scattered?

Ezekiel stood in a valley of dry bones—a picture of death and hopelessness. God asked him: “Can these bones live?” Ezekiel replied, “Lord God, you know.” Then God commanded him to prophesy, and breath entered the bones. They came together, covered with flesh, and stood alive—a vast army.

This is what God does. He breathes life into the dead.

Then Jesus tells us how to live. A scholar asks: “What is the greatest commandment?” Jesus answers with love—love God completely, and love your neighbor as yourself. The law is not a burden; it is the path of life. But the law cannot save us. It is the Spirit—the breath of God—who gives life.

Today we remember St. Pius X, a Pope of the Eucharist. He knew that the dry bones of the Church could only come alive through the Bread of Life. He urged us to receive Jesus in the Eucharist early and often.

So this week, if you feel dry, look to the Eucharist. It is the breath of God. Let love for God and neighbor be the rhythm of your heart. For love is not a heavy command—it is the very life of God within us.

Let the Spirit breathe on you. Come alive again. Amen.

May God bless you all.
