One of the most important figures in the early medieval Church was Saint Gregory the Great, the Pope and Doctor of the Church. He was born in Rome in 540 into a well-to-do family, but he made the decision to live a life dedicated to God. He became a monk, then a papal delegate, and in 590 he was elected Pope. Gregory was a knowledgeable pastor, a talented writer, and an enthusiastic servant of the poor who worked to uplift the Church, provide for the underprivileged, and propagate Christianity, particularly among European peoples. Along with his connection to Gregorian chant, he is renowned for his significant publications on Christian spirituality and pastoral practice. Gregory remained modest and devoted to prayer and service in spite of his numerous obligations. After his death in 604, he received the title of Doctor of the Church. He continues to be a model of devoted leadership, humility, discernment, and loving devotion to God and His people. His feast day is observed on September 3.
