Priests from across the Diocese of Mindat gathered in Lukse on August 4, 2026, for a half-day spiritual recollection and diocesan meeting to celebrate the feast day of St. John Mary Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests.

Of the diocese’s 29 priests, 25 attended the gathering alongside Bishop Augustine Thang Zawm Hung. Three priests were regrettably unable to join due to severe transportation challenges in the region.

Spiritual Reflection and Homily

During the recollection, Bishop Augustine Thang Zawm Hung delivered a reflection focusing on the profound spiritual legacy of St. John Mary Vianney. He noted that although the saint was known for his simplicity, lack of eloquence, and unassuming appearance, his life exemplified true holiness.

Bishop Augustine highlighted how St. John Mary Vianney centered his ministry on the Divine Mercy, the Holy Eucharist, and dedicated prayer. He consistently practiced all these virtues throughout his life.

The recollection concluded with a Eucharistic Celebration led by Bishop Augustine. Msgr. John Om Se delivered the homily, reflecting deeply on the true nature of prayer.

“Prayer is nothing else than union with God,” Msgr. John Om Se said. “When the heart is pure and united with God, it is consoled and filled with sweetness; it is dazzled by a marvelous light. We had deserved to be left incapable of praying; but God in his goodness has permitted us to speak to him. Our prayer is an incense that is delightful to God.”

Msgr. John Om Se reminded the clergy of St. John Mary Vianney’s inspirational words. He urged them to imitate the saint in their priestly life.

Diocesan Pastoral Meeting

At 2:30 PM, the clergy reassembled for an administrative and pastoral meeting focused on the future direction of the diocese. The discussions centered on three primary areas.

Education: Clergy discussed strategies for enhancing local educational opportunities and community support. They examined how to continue the education of children during the ongoing crisis.

Social Services: The meeting provided operational updates and outreach initiatives under the Mindat Diocese Karuna Mission Social Services (KMSS). Participants discussed ways to promote networking with all parishes as much as possible.

Pastoral Planning: The clergy explored broader strategies and developmental programs to support faith communities throughout the Mindat Diocese. They examined how to promote the role of catechists in the mission field.

The meeting concluded at 4:30 PM. Individual meetings with the local bishop continued into the night.

A Day of Unity and Purpose

The feast day celebration served as both a spiritual renewal and a strategic planning session for the diocese. Despite the challenges of transportation and the region’s difficult conditions, the gathering demonstrated the clergy’s commitment to their vocation and to the people they serve.

For the Diocese of Mindat, the day was a reminder of the enduring legacy of St. John Mary Vianney—a saint who, through simplicity and steadfast faith, became a model for priests everywhere. The clergy left Lukse with renewed spirits and a clear vision for the path ahead.
